Lakes and Dyes for Bath Bombs and Bath & Body Products

Muddy Soap Co. offers lakes and dyes for adding vibrant, customizable color to bath bombs, bubble products, soaps, and other bath and body projects. Review each product listing for its approved applications and specific usage guidance before formulating.

What Is the Difference Between Lakes and Dyes?

Dyes dissolve in water and can produce bright, concentrated color. Because they are water-soluble, only a small amount may be needed, and the color can spread readily throughout a water-based product.

Lakes are made by combining a dye with an insoluble base. They disperse rather than dissolve and are often selected for bath bombs and other dry or oil-containing formulations where controlled, even color is desired.

Choosing Color for Bath Bombs

Both lakes and dyes can create vibrant bath bomb colors, but they behave differently. Dyes usually produce strong color in the bathwater, while lakes can provide vivid color in the finished bath bomb and disperse when the product is used.

When formulating bath bombs, Polysorbate 80 or Poly Sugamulse D9 can help disperse colorants and oils through the bathwater and reduce color or oil clinging to the sides of the tub. Usage and results will vary by formula, so always test the finished product before offering it for sale.

Start with a small amount of color and increase gradually until the desired shade is reached. Wear appropriate protective equipment when handling concentrated powdered colorants.

Important: Color additives have specific approved applications. Always check the individual product information to confirm that a colorant is appropriate for your intended product.
