My Notes

Pricing Your Finished Muddy Laundry™ Detergent

Muddy Laundry™ is a concentrated laundry detergent base designed to give makers flexibility in creating their own finished laundry products.

Based on manufacturer guidance, a good starting point for testing is:

30% Muddy Laundry™ Concentrate
70% Water

This ratio is intended as a starting formulation point. Makers should always test their finished product for cleaning performance, fragrance compatibility, viscosity, preservation, and recommended amount per load before offering it for sale.

Approximate Cost of Muddy Laundry™ in a 32 oz Finished Bottle

At a 30% use rate, a 32 oz finished bottle requires approximately 9.6 oz of Muddy Laundry™ Concentrate.

Based on current Muddy Soap Co. package pricing:

Muddy Laundry™ Size PurchasedApproximate Concentrate Cost per 32 oz Finished Bottle
16 oz — $9.50$5.70
32 oz — $16.50$4.95
64 oz — $30.00$4.50

Purchasing larger sizes lowers the ingredient cost per finished bottle and may provide better margins for makers producing laundry detergent for resale.

Determining Your Finished Product Cost

The Muddy Laundry™ concentrate is only one part of your total cost. Be sure to include:

  • Bottle and closure
  • Label
  • Fragrance
  • Preservative, if required for your formulation
  • Additional ingredients or additives
  • Labor
  • Selling fees
  • Overhead
  • Shipping or packaging expenses

Once these costs are added together, you will have your true cost per finished bottle.

Example Retail Starting Point

If a 32 oz finished bottle costs approximately $6–$7 to produce after packaging and other ingredients are included, a maker may begin evaluating a retail price in approximately the $16–$20 range.

This is only a starting point. Your final selling price should reflect your actual costs, packaging, local market, desired margin, and overall business expenses.

Consider Cost Per Load

Cost per load can also be helpful when determining both your price and your customer value.

For example, if testing shows that ½ oz of finished detergent per load provides satisfactory performance, a 32 oz bottle would provide approximately:

64 loads

A $16 bottle would equal approximately $0.25 per load, while a $20 bottle would equal approximately $0.31 per load.

Your recommended amount per load should be based on your own finished-product testing.

Important Formulation Note

The 30% Muddy Laundry™ / 70% water ratio is a suggested starting point based on manufacturer guidance. It is not intended to replace proper product testing.

Any maker selling a finished laundry product is responsible for evaluating the final formulation, selecting appropriate preservation when needed, establishing directions for use, and ensuring that the finished product is suitable for its intended purpose.
